Volvo has appointed former Tesla chief executive Adrian Clark to lead its battery company in a joint venture with Northvolt.

Clark and Volvo will partner with battery development partner Northvolt to open a new dedicated battery plant and research and development center in Gothenburg.

The Research and Development Center will be the first step in a £2.5 billion strategy to develop batteries for Volvo’s future electric vehicles. Volvo said the new site will create “several hundred jobs” and make Volvo “one of the few automotive brands to make battery cell development and manufacturing part of its end-to-end engineering capabilities.”
