The auction house RM Sotheby’s has put up a 1964 BMW 700 Luxus minicar for auction online. Due to its external and technical features, this car resembles the ZAZ-966 “Zaporozhets”, although the Soviet car entered the conveyor after the Bavarian model was discontinued.

BMW 700, which was produced from 1959 to 1964, became the first car of the brand with a monocoque body. In addition, it was one of the first mainstream budget rear-engined models in Europe, on par with the Renault 8, Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Beetle. The 700 was mainly offered with a two-door sedan body, although the model also had rare non-factory modifications in the form of coupes and convertibles.

The design of the car was developed by the famous Italian specialist Giovanni Michelotti, who was responsible for the appearance of many famous cars of the brands Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia.

The BMW 700 was equipped with an air-cooled two-cylinder 697 cc engine based on the BMW R67 motorcycle engine. Unit with a capacity of 32 hp allowed the car to reach a maximum speed of 125 km / h. After the discontinuation of the “700”, BMW finally abandoned the production of cheap minicar cars.

The car for sale can be called one of the rarest BMWs in the United States. At the time of this writing, there are 2.5 hours left until the end of online trading. The last bid is $ 11,500.
