Toyota is developing a new hybrid powertrain for the latest generation of the Land Cruiser Prado SUV. Its distinctive feature will be the use of a diesel unit instead of a gasoline engine.
According to BestCarWeb2, the new generation of Toyota hybrids will be based on 2.5- and 3.5-liter diesel units. One of the “junior” variants will debut in the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Commercial vehicles, including models such as the Hiace and Granace, will be another area of development for Toyota’s diesel-hybrid powertrain. In addition, Japanese journalists found out that already this decade, without exception, all Toyota models on the local market will become hybrids.
It’s worth noting that diesel-electric hybrid powertrains appeared ten years ago, when Volvo introduced the first such unit in the V60. It is based on a 2.4-liter engine running on “heavy fuel”. At the same time, in 2011, the premiere of a 2-liter diesel internal combustion engine with 163 hp took place, united by the efforts of the PSA Peugeot Citroen concern with an electric motor with a capacity of 37 horsepower.
A new generation of Land Cruiser Prado SUV with traditional internal combustion engines should be released in 2023. The premiere of the car with a diesel-hybrid unit is scheduled for 2024.
