Today we will be testing the new Peugeot 308. The previous version of this model became the car of the year and was sold in 700,000 copies. A serious bid for success, but do not forget that VW Golf is the king in this class and Peugeot failed to move it from the throne last time. It seems that this time the French decided to take revenge: they updated the technical part, electronics, and also radically redesigned the interior and exterior. Let’s find out what came out of all this.

Peugeot 308 design

The design of the Peugeot 308 2021 immediately attracts attention, it turned out to be very expressive, muscular, bold and aggressive — large wheels, air intakes, radiator grille with its own special pattern. All the optics in the Peugeot 308 are LED in their own individual style.

The new Peugeot 308 is built on the EMP2 platform: Macpherson front, V-beam rear.

Compared to the previous generation, the Peugeot 308 2021 has grown: its length is 4360 mm, the wheelbase is 2675 mm, but it has become lower in height – 1440 mm. The clearance of the car is not large — only 125 mm.

Peugeot 308 2021 powerplant

We are testing a Peugeot 308 with a hybrid powerplant with a total capacity of 225 hp. In addition to the 1.6 l internal combustion engine with a capacity of 180 hp, an 81 kW electric motor is installed, which is powered by a 12.4 kWh battery. According to the manufacturer, the car can travel up to 60 km on one charged electric motor.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h turned out to be 8.3 seconds, for this class of car this indicator is considered quite good.

Suspension and steering Peugeot 308

Peugeot 308 has always been famous for its suspension, which was focused more on sportiness, but in the new Peugeot 308 2021, the French went even further and made it even more comfortable, despite the beam in the rear suspension design. Also, excellent noise insulation gives comfort, thanks to which no noise of wheels, pits, or bumps can be heard.

As a result, the suspension design combined with noise insulation gives the feeling that you are driving in a car of a higher class.

But things are worse with the steering, it’s not bad, but in VW Golf it fits better with the suspension and the lack of this balance in the Peugeot 308 2021 is noticeable immediately. The informativeness of the steering wheel is average, there are rolls in the turns, in short, the French went a different way than the Germans and in terms of steering they missed.

Peugeot 308 2021 interior

The interior of the new Peugeot 308 is very cozy, made according to the already familiar i-Cockpit architecture, the 3D instrument panel is located above the steering wheel, it is very beautiful and impressive, but not practical — the steering wheel covers part of the instrument panel.

The seating of the driver and front passenger is high, comfortable, there is enough space both in height and width.

But the seats themselves are AGR. AGR is the German association for the treatment and prevention of spinal problems (yes, it is German, you have not forgotten that Peugeot 308 2021 wants to compete with VW Golf). You understand what the designers have bet on, but you can not talk about such things as electrical adjustments, massage and heating.

The interior trim materials are of high quality, there are no creaks, some elements are sheathed with leatherette.

Most of the buttons in the cabin are touch-sensitive, but the most basic functions were done on hard buttons.

But the French wouldn’t be French if they didn’t do something special: i-toggle is the name of a separate panel on which there is a screen in which there are 5 cells. On each of the cells you can output the function you need.

Everything is fine with the multimedia system too: it works quickly, smoothly and without lags. Here VW Golf is noticeably losing.

The French claim that with an increase in the wheelbase by 55 mm. there is more space in the back row. Maybe it is, but in our opinion there is still not enough space in the back row.

The trunk volume of the Peugeot 308 2021 is 412 liters, which is quite a lot for a hatchback. I would also like to note that the trunk is sheathed with expensive material.

What can I say in the end: Peugeot 308 is a nice car, not perfect, but it can give you a high level of technical equipment combined with a memorable and spectacular appearance.
