The engine plant in Tremery in eastern France, which produces diesel engines for the PSA group (Peugeot and Citroen), will be completely refurbished for the production of car electric motors, according to Reulers.
This plant is the largest in the world for the production of diesel engines. He makes 600 thousand motors annually. The production of electric drives has already begun there. In 2021, it will be doubled, having made 180 thousand of these motors, and by 2025, they will completely switch to the production of electric motors in the amount of 900 thousand pieces annually.
It should be noted right away that an increase in the number of engines produced from 600 to 900 thousand does not mean an increase in the production of cars. Four-wheel drive electric cars usually have at least two motors.
The news follows the completion of the merger of the PSA and FCA groups into the Stellantis concern, which now unites the brands Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel, Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Maserati. That is, after the restructuring, all these brands will be able to use the products of the plant.
Now the company employs three thousand people. Despite the forthcoming increase in the number of engines produced, the production of electric motors is much less labor-intensive than the production of diesel engines. This will inevitably lead to job cuts, but the union hopes that this will be achieved through the natural loss of employees to retire.
