There were spy photos of the Renault Austral cabin

A day earlier, Renault announced the imminent debut of a new crossover called Austral, which will replace the Kadjar model in the current European line of the brand. A day later, Motor1.com had at its disposal spy photos of the novelty, taken during road tests in Spain, and the photos show the interior as well. The premiere of Renault Austral will take place in the first half of 2022, after which orders will start accepting.

Motor1.com assumes that the range of Austral engines will include a 1.3 gasoline turbo engine, which will also be offered with an electric superstructure in the form of a start-generator. A full-fledged hybrid and, probably, an all-electric modification is expected with a battery with a capacity of 87 kilowatt-hours, a single charge of which will last for 500 kilometers.

The positioning of the model will change compared to the Kadjar: the crossover will receive an original and more sporty body, which was partially revealed in the teaser video. Austral will be based on the CMF-C platform from the current Qashqai, and the design will be carried out with an eye on the recent Renault Megane E-Tech – this is confirmed by recent spy photos.

As for the salon, a single slightly curved panel will appear there, uniting the digital “tidy” and the screen of the multimedia system. You can see that the designers have retained a number of physical buttons, which, most likely, will be responsible for quick access to the car’s systems. The test prototype shown here is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, but automatic versions are also promised.

The name for the model was borrowed from Latin: Austral comes from the Latin word australis, or “southern”. The new name for the model was needed in order to avoid associations with Kadjar, which did not live up to the expectations of Renault and did not gain popularity among the brand’s customers.
