A relatively affordable but roomy sedan will appear in the Toyota bZ family of electric vehicles. It will be developed jointly with the Chinese BYD, primarily for the Chinese market, writes Automotive News Europe.
The concept is expected to premiere in April 2022 at the Beijing Auto Show, with a production model expected to arrive before the end of that year. According to preliminary data, we are talking about a car the size of a Corolla or slightly larger, with a more spacious rear row. The four-door should cost less than 200,000 yuan ($ 31,400), which means it will be in about the same market segment as the future cheapest Tesla.
BYD, now one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers, will provide a number of key technologies for the project, including Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries. These battery packs do not boast record-breaking energy density, but they are cheaper, more durable and more compact than many competitors.
Neither the Japanese nor the Chinese comment on the rumor about the upcoming sedan. At the same time, in the summer of 2019, they agreed to develop battery electric cars, and by the spring of 2020 they created a joint venture – BYD Toyota EV Technology (BTET). In addition, previously BYD was already officially mentioned – along with Daihatsu and Suzuki – among the partners with whom Toyota will develop the bZ line.
By 2025, Toyota is preparing 15 electric vehicles, seven of which belong to the beyond zero family. So far, only one of them has been presented – the bZ4X crossover. Earlier it was officially reported that the bZ index will mark several more SUVs, as well as a sedan and a minivan.
