The novelty will be based on the GA-B modular platform, on which the Toyota Yaris hatchback and the Yaris Cross compact SUV have already been developed.
Recall that the Toyota Aygo hatchback is the most compact and affordable model of the Japanese brand on the European market. So, in Germany, prices for such a car start at 11,190 euros. The Toyota Aygo model was developed jointly with the PSA concern and it has “twins” – the Citroen C1, as well as the Peugeot 108. At the same time, from January 1 of this year, the joint venture TPCA (Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile) in the Czech Colin became completely owned by the Japanese company and is now called Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic. The production of subcompact cars under French brands will be discontinued until the end of 2021.
If we talk about Toyota, then in the second half of 2021, the Czech company will start producing Toyota Yaris hatchbacks. But the main thing is that the Japanese brand does not intend to leave the European A segment and is independently planning a new compact hatchback. It doesn’t have a name yet, but it is likely to come from the current Aygo.
The novelty will be based on the GA-B modular architecture (a kind of TNGA platform), on which the Toyota Yaris hatchback and the Yaris Cross mini-crossover have already been developed. It is planned that with the appearance of the third model, the total production of cars on the GA-B platform in Europe will reach 500 thousand copies per year, which will reduce the cost of unified spare parts. Toyota also said that in order to maintain a competitive cost, the new small hatchback will retain the most common gasoline engine without a hybrid component. The machines have already entered the tests, and the debut of new items is expected in the second half of the year.
