Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC) announced the results of sales, production and exports last month, as well as cumulative totals for January-June 2020, including those for subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. Hino Motors, Ltd.
Sales in June rebounded to 84% of the previous year’s level, the press service of the automaker. Sales in China grew on an annual basis for three consecutive months, while sales in Europe declined by about 11.5%, but there also may a positive trend.
Japan sales began to recover to 77.3% from June in connection with the cancellation of the quarantine, which lasted from 7 April to 31 may. In the period from April to June, sales fell by 31%, recovering at a rate that exceeded initial expectations in may.
In June, global production has recovered to 76% from the previous year’s level (production fell by 50.8%, and 54.4% in may). The main drivers of growth were China (April: growth of 27.8%; may: growth of 13.5%; June: growth of 21.6%), North America (April: production suspended, may: a decline of 78.5 per cent; June: a decline of 8.4%) and Europe (April: fall of 99.2%; in may, 59.9 per cent; in June – 3.9%).
Global sales of Lexus brand vehicles in June was about 64 thousand units, reaching a record level in June. China, in particular, has become a major market for premium sub-brand – dealers of the brand sold about 22,000 units, which accounted for approximately 34% of total sales.
Crossover RAV4 became the best selling Toyota in the first half of the year. Its global sales totalled nearly 426 thousand units. The greatest demand model used in the markets of North America and in China, where it sold about 72 thousand cars, which is 15% more than last year.
