Battery crossover Toyota bZ4X Concept is presented today in Shanghai without technical specifications as a joint development of Toyota and its “daughter” Subaru. The twin-engine all-wheel drive is the firstborn of the new bZ series (beyond zero), which will include seven electric vehicles on the e-TNGA platform by 2025. In theory, the new line will allow “going beyond zero emissions” to “improve the world for all”. Sales of commercial SUV bZ4X will begin in mid-2022.
The exterior design combines dynamic forms and lines (dynamism) with practicality and utility. There is no grating, and the location of the diode lighting technology and sensors is described as a “hammerhead”. The bZ4X is close to the compact Toyota RAV4 in size.
The wheelbase is considered long, the overhangs are short. Subaru is responsible for the all-wheel drive system with electric motors on both axles. Chief Engineer Koji Toyoshima noted:
“Our target client is someone who pays great attention to the time spent with family and friends.
“The interior space is similar to the large D-segment sedan,” says Toyota. The diagonals of the digital device and the main touchscreen are not named. The steering wheel, like in the Lexus LF-Z, has been replaced by a steering yoke, which is connected to the wheels “by wires”.
Nothing out of the ordinary has been proposed by the bZ4X prototype, so it is unofficially regarded as an electric RAV4 that will be produced in Japan and China. Although Toyota promises a lineup of 70 electrified models by 2025, only 15 of them will be pure electric cars, and the share of plug-in hybrids will be around 10%.
Toyota has sold over 17 million electrified vehicles to date, reducing CO2 emissions by 140 million tonnes, ”the company said.
