General Motors has confirmed that the updated 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will debut on October 21 during a virtual online event. The change of model year will bring “significant updates” to design, technology and capabilities. Further details are kept under wraps, but it’s safe to say that the scope of the updates will be the same as the sibling 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
Under the hood, the base model’s 2.7-liter turbo engine will have 20% more torque than the 2021 model, but the naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 will no longer be available for the 2022 model. year. The 2.7-liter turbocharged engine produces 310 hp. and 472 Nm of torque in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Traction capacity of the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel variant will also increase by 20%.
Outside, the 2022 Sierra is likely to have a larger grille, updated bumpers and redesigned headlights to freshen up the exterior. The interior will also undergo a major overhaul with more premium materials in top trims.
On the tech side, expect the 2022 GMC Sierra to have a larger touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, and the top-of-the-line Denali will come with GM’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise assistance system. Also coming with the update is a new off-road AT4X performance that will be equivalent to the 2022 “charged” Silverado ZR2. These upgrades will likely make the 2022 GMC Sierra more expensive than the 2021 model, which starts at $ 30,100.
