Updated Tiguan: the “charged” for success?

Volkswagen Tiguan the second generation, which debuted nearly five years ago, survived a planned upgrade. For the manufacturer this restyling is one of the most important events of the year: it’s no joke, at the end of 2019, the SUV became the best-selling brand, ahead of sales, even Golf.

The exterior design was not a surprise thanks to spy photos that we have seen a lot in recent months. New grille should, according to the authors, be associated with larger models, including the Touareg and Atlas Cross Sport. After the Touareg, Passat and Golf “Tiguan” got a dot matrix led headlights. Also changed the rear lights, the bumpers, the logo of the brand.

The salon in terms of design and furnishing reinterpreted in the same vein as the updated Volkswagen Arteon. There is also a new steering wheel with touch panels, touch control climate installation, a new “virtual cockpit” infotainment complex MIB3-enabled wireless smartphone integration and improved voice recognition. The equipment included and acoustics Harman/Kardon, but it is weaker than in the “Artone” – 480 watt.

The engine range of the crossover have also upgraded the image and likeness of the flagship cars of the family. A range-topping now is the long-awaited VW Tiguan R 320-strong “turboservice” and the new AWD system, able to distribute torque between the rear wheels. R-version also differs from the younger “of Tiganov” underestimated by 10 mm suspension with adjustable dampers, racing mode driving electronics. In addition, this SUV is based on special bumpers, a rear diffuser, sports exhaust system with four tailpipes, 21-inch wheels, sports seats with integrated head restraints.

In addition, as promised, after upgrading the crossover became plug-in hybrid. Its 245-strong installation is borrowed from the “heated” Golf GTE, but such a modification is called Tiguan eHybrid – similar to the “uncharged” Golf eHybrid (204 HP) and Arteon eHybrid (218 HP). However, the abbreviation GTE still retained as the name for the dynamic driving mode, which when activated 1.4-liter gasoline turbo engine and an electric motor will give the full program. In pure electric mode Tiguan eHybrid can travel up to 50 km in the WLTP cycle.

Details about other engine manufacturer has not yet revealed – with one exception: diesels, “Tiguan” is now equipped with two selective catalytic converters for nitrogen oxides and double injection AdBlue – how all the same “Golf” and “Arteon”. There borrowed and a new assistant of driving Travel Assist. Already existing digital assistants have become more efficient, particularly now they better recognize pedestrians and road markings.

In Europe the updated crossover will have four basic configuration: Tiguan, Life, Elegance and R-Line. Prices will be announced closer to start of sales.
