Volkswagen Golf 8 — is everything so unambiguous?


Today we will test drive a car that until today was considered the king in its class and find out if it managed to keep the championship. We have a Volkswagen Golf 8 2021 on a test drive. Well, to get the most emotions, we decided to test the Golf 8 GTI version.

Let’s start with the design and in our opinion it is quite controversial. And all this is because of the front of the car: a new bumper, a new radiator grille, new optics, everything seems to be done with restraint and solidly… But it seems that it was all collected from different car models. Everything individually looks very beautiful, but together, to put it mildly, it is not unambiguous. The optics of the Golf 8 are excellent, it illuminates the road very well and at the same time does not blind drivers of oncoming vehicles. But there is one significant disadvantage – the lack of headlight washers, which is, to put it mildly, strange for such a car. I was also a little upset by the fact that the mirrors are folded manually. According to our measurements, the clearance of the Golf 8 GTI was 120 mm. This is not quite enough for our roads, but for the entire time of the test drive, we have never caught the bottom.

Golf 8 GTI engine

The heart of the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI is a 2.0 TSI turbo engine with 245 hp and a maximum torque of 370 nm. According to our measurements, it accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 seconds. A very good result, given the fact that the drive is on the front wheels. But, as a popular joke among VAG fans says: a GTI with a normal drive is an R Line. Therefore, if you want even more dynamics, buy a Volkswagen Golf 8 in the R Line configuration with all-wheel drive.

Fuel consumption in the urban cycle we got from 12 to 14 liters per 100 km., but with such an engine, this figure is quite conditional …
Performance Pack for Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI is not planned yet, so we are waiting for the release of firmware for chip tuning.
The engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox with two clutches and there is nothing more to add here.

Brakes and suspension

But what really pleased us about the new Golf 8 is the brakes. Having measured the braking distance from 100 to 0 km / h, we got 36 meters — this is an excellent result.
The suspension in the Golf 8 GTI is quite rigid and very tenacious, handling is excellent. Steering with variable gear ratio, which allows you to comfortably drive the car both in urban traffic and when driving actively.

The springs were modified in the design of the front suspension, their rigidity was increased by 5%, shock absorbers and fastening of the front levers. The front subframe in the Golf 8 is now aluminum.

In the design of the rear suspension, the design of the springs was modified, their rigidity was increased by 15%, the design of shock absorbers and rear lever mounts.
Unfortunately, the adaptive shock absorbers option has disappeared.


The interior of the Volkswagen Golf GTI is restrained and elegant, well assembled: not a single creak is heard, the materials are soft and of high quality.
The front seats are very comfortable, although sporty, there are huge pockets in the doors in which you can put anything you want, there is enough space in the back row, the ceiling does not press on your head.

The Golf 8 has not been spared by modern technologies: a new digital instrument panel, a projection on the windshield, a new multimedia system Harman Kardon, wireless charging for a smartphone, as well as touch buttons on the steering wheel.

But the noise insulation of the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI is insufficient, as is the trunk – only 381 liters.
What can be concluded from today’s test drive — the new Golf 8 continues to be the leader in its class, sets new quality standards, but still has one old drawback – a high price.
