Volkswagen ID.4 becomes “World Car”

The winner of the World Car of the Year 2021 (WCOTY) award is the Volkswagen ID.4 compact electric crossover. A jury of 93 judges from 28 countries gave him more points than the Honda e and Toyota Yaris.

Recall that ID.4 is built on the MEB electrical modular platform. It became Volkswagen’s first truly global electric vehicle. It is produced in parallel in Germany, China and the USA and sold in the main largest markets in the world. The crossover is produced both with a mono-drive and with all drive wheels, the power of the electric motors varies from 148 to 306 hp, the battery capacity is from 55 to 77 kW * h.

The last time Volkswagen was the winner was in 2013. Then the award went only to the seventh generation Golf that entered the market.

The best cars in other categories have been selected. The “Sports Car of the Year” is the Porsche 911 Turbo. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class of the W223 generation won the “Luxury Car of the Year” nomination.

By the way, the baby Honda e still received the “gold”: he was chosen in the category “City Car of the Year”.

The Land Rover Defender SUV was praised for its styling and was awarded the Best Vehicle Design award.

In previous years, a separate category “Green Car of the Year” was also presented, in which only electric vehicles and hybrids were considered, but in 2020 it was simplified, since such cars began to successfully perform in regular nominations. This can be clearly seen even now, because two awards went to the “electric trains” at once.

A year ago, the winner in the open category was the KIA Telluride crossover.
