During the premiere of the Volkswagen ID.5 cross-coupe, the German manufacturer partially revealed another model – ID. Buzz. It seems that this is becoming a kind of tradition, because the ID.5 itself first appeared in the spring at the presentation of the ID.4 GTX.

ID. Buzz is positioned as the ideological successor of the classic Volkswagen Type 2, a kind of Microbus of the XXI century. Volkswagen has been working on the launch of such a model in the Volkswagen series for at least six years: in early 2016, the concept electric minivan BUDD-e debuted at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, followed by I.D. prototypes. Buzz (2017), I.D. Buzz Cargo (2018) and newest self-driving ID. Buzz AD, introduced just early this fall.

The first test cars that our spies came across were disguised by Volkswagen as “Transporter”, but gradually the promising novelty began to acquire its original look. At the same time, if a certain amount of camouflage remained on the latest photographs from tests on an electric van, then in the fresh official video it is absent: you can view the entire front part, including the headlights and the lower grille, without interference. At the same time, Volkswagen decided to maintain a semblance of intrigue, using rainbow colors, including not glass.

Like all civilian electric vehicles of the Volkswagen ID. family, Buzz is built on the MEB modular platform. It allows the use of batteries with a capacity of up to 111 kilowatt-hours and the installation of electric motors on one or both axles. The passenger concept of 2017, with a length of less than 5 meters, had a wheelbase of 3.3 meters, and, most likely, the commercial model will be made about the same dimensions. A commercial version with an increased rear overhang will also reach the conveyor, and for some markets it will be made autonomous: instead of drivers, couriers without “licenses” will drive around in such cars, monitoring only the delivery of goods.

Full premiere of Volkswagen ID. Buzz is set to take place in the coming months. The electric car will enter the European market in 2022, and it will appear in the US in 2023.
