Volvo has developed guidelines for child safety in cars

Volvo Cars, a leader in the field of road safety, found the most common mistakes in the transportation of children in cars. Based on the research of 7,000 real cases of road accident with children aged 0 to 15 years, the company has developed a number of recommendations for their safety.

Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable passengers. The safe transport must be given special attention. For example, if an infant or child suffer from a traumatic brain injury, it often causes brain damage, which is much more serious than facial injuries. This is because the head is nine-month-old child is 25% of its total weight. For comparison, the adult head is only 6% of the total body mass.

The correct use of safety equipment for children’s transportation reduces the likelihood or reduce the impact of injuries in an accident. One of the most common mistakes – carriage of infants and children on the hands or in chairs that do not meet the age or height / weight of a child. Thus, according to the research partner Volvo, the Swedish insurance company Folksam, the risk for a small child seriously injured in the seat installed in the direction of the car, five times higher than when the chair is set against the direction of motion.

That is why Volvo Cars highlights the need for proper use of safety equipment for children. This was developed a number of recommendations:

  • Until the child reaches the age of 4 the child seat must be installed against the direction of movement of the vehicle.
  • Attention should be paid to the use of airbags when transporting children on the front passenger seat. If the child is carried in a seat installed against the direction of movement of the vehicle, the airbag must be turned off.
  • It is important to use safety belt for children. The diagonal part of the belt should be placed over the shoulder of the child, not at hand. The horizontal part must pass through the upper part of the thighs of the child, not through the stomach.

For over half a century Volvo cares about the setting the quality of the means of passive safety in their vehicles for the driver and passengers of any age. The company recently celebrated the 60th anniversary since the establishment of the three-point safety belt in cars.

Test child seat facing rearward, Volvo began in 1964. The chair has developed Bertil of Altman, Professor at the Technical University of Calmera in Gothenburg (Sweden). The creation was inspired by the then seat of the astronauts. The development was tested in a Volvo PV444, and after 8 years the company introduced the first car seat was installed against the direction of motion. It distributes the force of impact in a collision, which reduced the likelihood of serious damage.

In 1990 Volvo introduced a child seat integrated in the rear passenger seat. This innovation has replaced the need of additional equipment for the child and improved comfort in the car. Child seats Volvo developed taking into account the weight of babies and young children. Created 80% natural cotton fabrics, they are installed in the car using ISOFIX anchorages and make the transportation of children more comfortable and safe.

In 2014, Volvo has created an inflatable child seat, which weighs just 5 kg, so it can be taken as hand Luggage on the plane. Also Volvo has developed recommendations on the use of different types of child seats for passengers of different weights and ages.

“Volvo pays special attention to transportation of children in cars: the protection of the head and spine, spreading the force of impact in collisions, and so on. We urge all parents to take responsibility for the choice of child seats and proper seatbelt use for children of different ages”, – said Artem Tkachenko, commercial Director of Volvo, LLC “winner imports Ukraine, Ltd.”.
