Volvo recalls 460,000 cars worldwide

According to published data, Volvo has announced the recall of more than 460,000 older Volvo S60 and Volvo S80 sedans. Malfunctioning airbags on the driver’s side reportedly caused the campaign. Interestingly, the “symptoms” of the malfunction are very similar to those that caused the scandal with the airbags manufactured by the Japanese company Takata, but other pillows were installed in Volvo.

According to the American regulator NHTSA, the Volvo S60 sedans produced in the period from 2001 to 2009 and the Volvo S80 produced in the period from 2001 to 2006 are equipped with airbags, the igniter of which becomes unusable during operation. As a result of an accident, such an airbag can be deployed too quickly, and the burning squib will release more energy, which can cause the driver to be injured by metal fragments.

Note that this is not the first case of recalling a large number of old Volvo sedans – in November last year, the company had to return more than 124,000 of these cars due to a defect in airbags. It is reported that Volvo will replace the airbags in cars at its own expense.
