When will we see the BMW X8?

BMW Group USA has announced its own media event on November 16-17 ahead of the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Representatives of the brands BMW M, MINI and BMW Motorrad will show journalists several concepts there.

The most intriguing part of the announcement is the promise to present “the new flagship BMW M”. It will be a “powerful hybrid”, the production of which will be set up at a plant in the American Spartanburg (South Carolina). The chairman of the board of the sports division Frank van Meele and chief designer Markus Syring will talk about it. Alas, the embargo was imposed on the disclosure of information until November 30.

However, something is clear already now. Back in August, the head of the board of directors of BMW, Oliver Zipse, said that by the end of this year the Spartanberg enterprise would master the production of a certain high-class car, which would become a fundamentally new product in the brand’s product line and would be presented in the markets of the United States and other countries. Accordingly, this month we will be shown not just a concept car, but a prototype close to the series.

Considering that this company specializes in off-road vehicles, we can most likely assume that we are talking about the BMW X8 – a large, but strictly two-row SUV, rumored about for at least four years. Photo spies have repeatedly come across various test specimens, including those with a rather unusual arrangement of exhaust pipes for BMW.

It is believed that the “charged” modification of the BMW X8 (it will probably be called the X8 M) will be – as in the announcement – a hybrid. The combination of the proprietary 4.4-liter V8 and electric motor should give it about 750 hp. power. According to rumors, the next generation M5 sports sedan will later receive a similar power plant with plug-in capability.
