Why are Toyota and Subaru teaming up?

Toyota and Subaru have announced the premiere of the mysterious car, created by joint efforts, which will take place on April 5, 2021. On the Web, they are guessing what kind of model it will be: according to one version, we are talking about the new GT 86 and BRZ, according to the other, about an electric crossover. There are also speculations that the brands created sports cars to participate in the rally.

Toyota and Subaru keep intrigue. They released a joint statement saying the following:

“The new model will be a symbolic achievement in which the two brands, sharing the same feelings for the car, have further strengthened their cooperation to create a car that surpasses their predecessors.”

The fact that the message was published on the website of the Toyota Gazoo Racing division hints at the sporty nature of the novelty. So, with a high degree of probability, this is still not an electric crossover.

However, the version with the new Toyota GT 86 of the second generation sounds doubtful, since it was previously reported that the premiere of the model was postponed until 2022. Subaru BRZ of the new generation, in turn, was presented last year.

So most likely the companies are preparing the premiere of a rally car that will take part in the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Cooperation between Toyota and Subaru began in 2005 with contract production of cars, then the brands entered into an agreement to jointly develop a rear-wheel drive sports car, which was sold as both the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ. In addition, Toyota is Subaru’s largest shareholder.
