The Korean Car Blog site has figured out the reasons for the delay in launching the new-generation KIA Sportage. According to journalists, the postponement of the premiere from the first half of 2020 to the spring of 2021 was influenced by the new Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, EUI-soon Chung.
The assumption that during the work on the new Sportage, KIA stylists had disagreements with the management of Hyundai Motor Group, was confirmed. It turned out that the new Chairman of the group, Yu-sung Chung, met repeatedly with both designers and engineers involved in the project. In particular, he flatly refused to compromise and accelerate the development process in order to have time to prepare the car on time. EUI-soon Chung insisted on postponing the premiere, which allowed him to buy time to prepare a product of “impeccable quality”.
At the end of April this year, it became known about the resignation of the chief designer of Hyundai Motor Group, Luke Donkerwolke, who was responsible for the appearance of the Genesis and KIA models in General, and the Sportage in particular. According to one version, the departure of the specialist was caused precisely by disagreements with the management regarding the new Sportage.
In the summer, the test prototype of the KIA Sportage was first noticed on the road – this was evidence that the project is in an active stage. Later, the Network got spy photos of the new Sportage with an extended wheelbase.
About the new-generation Sportage, it is known that it will share a platform with the recently introduced Hyundai Tucson. This model is one of the key models in the KIA range.
