The Japanese company Yamaha Motor unveiled a new motor for electric vehicles with the highest efficiency in the class on April 12. Its power reaches 476 hp. According to the company, this is a record for such a compact size (the exact dimensions have not yet been published).
The engine runs at 800 V. In fact, this is the new standard among electric vehicles. A similar on-board network is used, in particular, in the Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The unit is supposed to be used in compact sports cars. Judging by last year’s promo video, prototypes of the electric motor were tested on an Alfa Romeo 4 ° C (the car is disguised and devoid of identity, although it is not difficult to recognize an Italian coupe in it). This two-door a little less than four meters long in the factory version weighs only 895 kilograms. From the factory, it is equipped with a 240-horsepower 1.8-liter turbo engine, so replacing it with a 476-horsepower electric motor should provide an impressive increase in dynamics. However, the novelty can be applied to cars of other classes.
The electric motor uses oil cooling to increase the stability of its components under continuous high loads. 476 h.p. – maximum power, the unit, if desired, can be configured for less output.
Yamaha is already accepting OEM orders. The company will sell the electric motor to third-party electric vehicle manufacturers.
