Serial production of Yaris Cross, the most compact SUV Toyota for the European market, has started in Valenciennes, France.
The production of the new Toyota is organized at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing France plant, which also produces the fourth generation Yaris hatchbacks. The two models are now leaving the same assembly line – investments in its retooling amounted to 400 million euros. Thanks to this, the production capacity of the car assembly plant increased to 300 thousand cars per year.
Recall that Toyota Yaris Cross is built on the basis of the hatchback of the same name – the two models have the same wheelbase (2560 mm), while the “Cross” is slightly higher and wider, and also has a ground clearance increased by 3 cm. The new model received a hybrid power plant with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor, which together develop up to 116 hp. power. Toyota claims it is the only four-wheel drive vehicle in its class.
“The introduction of the Yaris Cross is important because it not only enhances Toyota’s competitiveness, but also strengthens our strategy to localize production and maximize production capacity to meet Toyota’s goal of increasing sales in Europe to 1.5 million units by 2025,” – said Marvin Cooke, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Europe.
By the way, hybrid transmissions, as well as electric motors for Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross, come to France from the company’s plant in Poland. Thus, the five-door cars really have a high degree of localization in Europe, although the company does not give exact numbers.
The European start of sales of the Toyota Yaris Cross is scheduled for early autumn 2021. In Japan, a similar model has debuted earlier and is already on sale.
